For instance, Oldfield offers what I consider a continuum of human functioning, with “fully aliveness” on one side of the spectrum and “sin” on the other. What Oldfield emphasizes in this is that how people function reflects the extent to which they are connected with themselves, the Earth, others, and the Divine. In other words, to be fully alive means we are connected; to be in sin means we are disconnected. It is important that when we embark upon this quest to alleviate our spiritual malady that we are not too harsh on ourselves.
How to Understand How an Addict May Suffer Spiritually
Paradoxically, it is the way of strength. The verdict of the ages is that faith means courage. Instead we let Him demonstrate, through us, what He can do. We ask Him to remove our fear and direct our attention to what He would have us be. Notice that the word “fear” is bracketed alongside the difficulties with Mr. Brown, Mrs. Jones, the employer, and the wife. This short word somehow touches about every aspect of our lives.
The spiritual malady and addiction
- The idea is to look for a spiritual solution to an addiction problem, as this type of issue affects more than someone physically.
- Selfishness and self -centeredness is the root of my trouble.
- Did we unjustifiably arouse jealousy, suspicion or bitterness?
- There is a unity of both approaches because they both come from God.
- By using this approach, a recovering addict can experience a notable change in their outlook.
History, we can finally learn how to get cured of alcoholism. Part Two of this four part series will include Step’s Four, Five, and Six. Good luck to all, and to all a good recovery. We abuse substances and make it our highest priority regardless of the negative consequences. By doing so, we may avoid forming relationships, create a distorted reality, and are unaware of personal responsibility.
Do you want Noomii to recommend other ideal coaches for you?
The right answer will come, if we want it. If we do, we destroy our chance of being helpful. We cannot be helpful to all people, but at least God will show us how to take a kindly and tolerant view of each and every one. Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step of which is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never attempted.
What is A Spiritual Malady?
One is a mobilization response to threat where we can prejudge, react, attack, argue, criticize, blame, and experience interpersonal disconnections. This is frequently referred to as “fight and flight” physiology. The other threat phenotype is one of relative immobilization where we retreat, ruminate, isolate, dissociate and experience bodily and spiritual disconnections.
- By doing this, we holistically treat the whole person in order to effect treatment outcomes.
- The only solution to a spiritual malady is a spiritual awakening.
When we are under threat, we create a bias towards negative, selfish, aggressive and prejudiced thoughts. When being chased by a tiger it is helpful to think “danger”, react quickly, judge without contemplation, defend and protect one’s self. It is not a time for deep thought, nor bonding and sharing, or you’ll be sharing a meal with the tiger and not in a good way. Threat brings about adaptive physiology and behaviors that prevent sociality and spirituality, but serve us well in a defense. Chronic threat brings about maladaptive chronic physiology and behaviors that over time increase our illness and disease burden.

It is the emptiness we feel on such a deep level that we turn to self-medication in order to alleviate the sadness and despair that go hand in hand with. But in our quest to fill this void with any and everything we can think of, we completely miss that the only thing that can actually fulfill us a spiritual connectedness to something greater than ourselves. So physical cravings are not the primary spiritual malady reason we slip. Well, if you’ve been in Celebrate Recovery or any 12-step program for a while you know that, for most people who are actively working the steps, over time the mental obsession dissipates. I remember my wife Deb coming home from her first Overeater’s Anonymous meeting. “They told me that I will actually lose my obsession with food.” Then she added, “I don’t believe them!
thoughts on “How do you know if you are having a spiritual experience?”
- It is the emptiness we feel on such a deep level that we turn to self-medication in order to alleviate the sadness and despair that go hand in hand with.
- It takes rigorous honesty, and it might require a lot of digging and peeling away of layers to start uncovering things.
- I am a recovering alcoholic who happens to be a Life Coach.
If we’re serious about our recovery, if we really want to experience freedom from these behaviors that keep us in bondage, we have to be rigorously honest with our answers. But like it says in the serenity prayer; we accept hardship as a pathway to peace. So, what is the cure for physical, mental, emotional, shadow, social and spiritual illness, and disease?
It is plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness. To the precise extent that we permit these, do we squander the hours that might have been worth while. But with the alcoholic, whose hope is the maintenance and growth of a spiritual experience, this business of resentment is infinitely grave. For when harboring such feeling we shut ourselves off from the sunlight of the Spirit.
